Look for fence panels that are bowing or leaning outward, especially near large bushes or trees. You might also notice rust spots on metal fences where vines hold moisture, or rotting wood at the base where ivy and grass are thick. If you see leaves and branches pushing directly against the fence, that pressure can warp the structure over time.

In our area, the main causes are humidity rusting the hinge pins, heavy wooden gates sagging over time from the damp climate, or repeated stress from a gate that drags on the ground because the post has shifted in the sandy soil. Storm winds can also strain hinges, causing them to snap or bend.

We start by trimming back the vegetation so we can assess the damage. Then we replace any warped or rotted boards and straighten or reset leaning posts. If roots have pushed a concrete footer out of alignment, we'll pour a new footer. Finally, we can install a small gravel barrier or root barrier to help prevent future problems from regrowth.
