The most common cause is the freeze-thaw cycle. In Central Ohio, clay soil retains moisture. When temperatures drop, the water in the soil freezes and expands, pushing posts upward. As it thaws, the soil settles unevenly. Over time, this movement loosens the posts and causes fences to lean or sag.

We first remove the damaged post and dig a wider, deeper hole below the frost line—typically 30 to 36 inches in this area. We pour a concrete collar around the base of the post, ensuring proper drainage so water doesn’t pool. For existing posts that have shifted slightly, we can sometimes brace them with a metal support spike driven into stable ground.

Pressure-treated pine or cedar posts resist rot and moisture better than untreated wood. Galvanized steel posts are another excellent choice, as they won’t warp. We also recommend setting posts in high-strength concrete with a gravel base at the bottom to improve drainage and reduce frost heave.
