The main cause is the heavy clay soil in our area. When it gets wet, the soil expands and pushes against posts. Then, during freeze-thaw cycles, the ground shifts and heaves. Over time, this loosens the posts and traps moisture against the wood, causing rot. Look for loose or bouncy railings, cracked or splintered deck boards, nails popping up, and any soft or spongy spots when you walk on it. If you see water stains or mold on the underside, that’s a sign of moisture damage. In Glouster’s wet climate, we often find hidden rot where the deck attaches to the house. Start with the right materials for our local weather. We recommend using composite decking or premium pressure-treated wood that’s rated for ground contact. Proper flashing where the deck meets your house is critical to prevent water intrusion. Also, make sure the deck is built with joists spaced no more than 16 inches apart for strength. Finally, seal or stain the wood every two to three years, and keep leaves and debris off the surface to avoid moisture buildup.
