The main cause is soil movement. Diboll’s soil contains a high amount of clay, which expands when wet and shrinks during dry spells. This constant shifting loosens the grip on fence posts, especially if they were set in shallow holes without concrete. Over time, posts can lean, rot at ground level, or even pull completely out of the ground.

Look for visible signs like panels that no longer sit level, gaps between the bottom rail and the ground, or bent pickets. You might also notice that gate latches don’t align properly, or that the entire section wobbles when you push against it. These signs indicate that the supporting posts or anchors have shifted due to ground movement.

The most effective solution is to remove the unstable post, dig a hole below the frost line (at least 24 inches deep), and set the new post in a concrete collar that extends wider at the bottom. This creates a stable anchor that resists the pushing and pulling of clay soils. For existing posts that are still solid, we can add bracing or re-set them with a concrete base to prevent future movement.
