The main cause is constant contact with damp soil, especially during our wet winters and springs. Poor drainage around the post base, ground moisture trapped by thick mulch or grass, and untreated wood are common culprits. Over time, the wood softens and the post loses its grip in the ground, making the fence unstable.

Look for visible leaning or sagging sections, cracks near the base of the post, or soft, spongy wood when you poke it with a screwdriver. You might also notice the fence panel pulling away from the post, or the post wobbling when you push against the fence. If the ground around the post is constantly wet or has mushrooms growing, that’s a red flag.
