Salt spray, moisture, and sandy soil accelerate rust and rot in standard wood or metal fences. Leaving untreated wood exposed or using non-galvanized hardware, especially in neighborhoods like Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach, can lead to warping, corrosion, and loose posts within two to three years.

Look for rust spots on metal, peeling paint or soft spots on wood, and loose or leaning posts. If you notice white, powdery residue on aluminum (oxidation), or if the fence feels spongy at the base, it’s likely the soil and moisture have compromised the structure. In the Landfall area, we often see this after just a few coastal summers.

For long-term durability, we recommend powder-coated aluminum or high-grade vinyl. Both resist rust, rot, and salt damage far better than wood, and they hold up well in the sandy soil common around Masonboro Sound and along Market Street. We also offer steel and pressure-treated wood options, but they require more maintenance in our humid environment.
