In DC, the main causes are high humidity, heavy rain, and rapid temperature changes. Wood absorbs moisture and expands, then dries out and contracts, leading to twisting and cupping. Direct sun exposure on one side of the fence can also speed up warping. Using pressure-treated lumber and proper sealing helps, but regular maintenance is key in our climate.

Look for a gap between the gate and the latch post, or if the gate scrapes the ground when opening. You might also notice the gate doesn't latch smoothly. Sagging usually starts at the hinges—check if the top hinge is pulling away from the post or if the screws are loose. Catching it early often means a simple hinge adjustment instead of a full replacement.

For minor warping, we can sometimes re-secure the panel with additional screws or brackets. If the panel is severely bowed, we recommend replacing just that section with a new, properly treated panel. We also check the posts and rails to ensure they aren't contributing to the problem.
