The main culprit is the salt-laden air from the Gulf of Mexico, which accelerates rust on steel and iron fences. Combined with high humidity and occasional flooding, the corrosive effect is much stronger here than inland. That’s why we recommend aluminum or vinyl fencing for new installations, and for existing metal fences, we apply a rust-inhibiting primer and paint to slow down damage.

After a heavy rain or flood event, look for leaning posts, cracks in the concrete around the base, or soil that has washed away from the post holes. You might also notice the fence gate dragging or not closing properly. These are signs that the ground has softened or eroded, compromising the stability of your fence. If you see any of these, give us a call for a free inspection—we can reinforce the posts with deeper footings or replace them if needed.

For our area, we strongly recommend aluminum fencing. It doesn’t rust like steel, and it’s strong enough to handle wind and water. For privacy fences, vinyl-coated chain-link or composite wood are also good choices. We also install all posts with extra-deep concrete footings—at least 24 inches—to prevent erosion from washing them out. Plus, we add gravel at the base for drainage. That way your fence stays solid even after a storm.
