The combination of intense summer heat and humidity from the Bay Area fog can cause wood to expand and contract unevenly. If your fence is near a south-facing slope or has poor airflow (common in neighborhoods like Stambaugh-Heller), the sun's rays bake one side while the other stays damp. Our solution is to replace warped boards with pressure-treated or heat-treated lumber, add proper spacing for expansion, and sometimes install a moisture barrier to prevent future cupping.

Look for orange or brown streaks on the surface, bubbling paint, or small pinholes in the metal. In Redwood City, rust accelerates near salty air (especially closer to the bay) and where sprinklers regularly hit the fence. If the rust has reached the point where sections are weak or flaking, we can sand down the affected areas, apply a zinc-rich primer, and repaint.
