For decks built before current building codes, we recommend reinforcing joists and adding proper railings. Leaning fences are common here due to clay soil shifting and wind from storms. We dig down to check the post footings—often they’re too shallow or rotted. We’ll either reset the posts with concrete footings deep enough to resist frost heave, or replace sections entirely. We also recommend pressure-treated or cedar posts that hold up better in our humid climate.
