Question Answers

What causes fence posts to lean or pull out of the ground in Iron Mountain?

Our freeze-thaw cycles are the main culprit. Water seeps into the soil around the post, freezes, expands, and then thaws, creating shifting ground. Shallow-set posts or posts in concrete that doesn't extend below the frost line (typically 48-54 inches in Dickinson County) are especially prone to heaving. At Nelson Custom Fencing, we set our posts to the proper depth for our local soil conditions to prevent this.

My wooden fence has moss growing on the north side and boards are starting to rot at the bottom. Is this normal?

It's common in our area, especially near shaded spots like along the pine stands off Lake Antoine Road. Moss holds moisture against the wood, and that trapped moisture – combined with snow sitting at the base – accelerates rot. We recommend cedar or pressure-treated lumber, proper ground clearance (at least 2 inches between the bottom board and soil), and a good sealer. For existing fences, cleaning off moss and improving drainage can extend the life.

The wind along the ridge by Pine Mountain knocked a few pickets off my fence. Can you reinforce it without replacing the whole thing?

Absolutely. Many fences in exposed areas like near Pine Mountain Ski Jump or along Chapin Pit Road need extra bracing against our winter gusts. We can replace missing pickets, add wind braces to the gate posts, and use heavier gauge nails or screws. Sometimes we also recommend a small panel gap or using a board-on-board design that sheds wind better than a solid panel.
