Fargo’s clay-rich soil expands when wet and contracts when dry, causing significant ground movement. During freeze-thaw cycles, this soil can push fence posts upward or sideways. Newman Fence counters this by setting posts below the frost line (at least 48 inches deep) and using gravel backfill for drainage. This prevents the soil from shifting the post, keeping your fence stable year-round.

Common signs include the gate dragging on the ground, difficulty latching, or visible gaps between the gate and post. Temperature changes cause metal and wood to expand and contract, which can warp frames or loosen hinges. A quick test: if your gate doesn’t swing freely or leaves more than a half-inch gap when closed, it likely needs adjustment. For our area, we recommend heavy-gauge galvanized steel or vinyl fencing with reinforced rails. Wood is popular but requires pressure-treated lumber and proper sealing to resist moisture and rot. Chain link is another durable option, but we always use thicker posts and deeper concrete footings. These materials and installation methods prevent sagging and breakage during 50 mph wind gusts and heavy snow accumulation.
