The main cause is the shrinking and shifting of clay-heavy soil as it dries out. This creates gaps around the post, reducing stability. Over time, wind and normal gate use can make the problem worse, leading to leaning or wobbling posts.

Look for warping, cracking, or splintering along the edges of the panels. The wood may also appear faded or brittle. In severe cases, panels can separate from the rails or develop large gaps that reduce privacy.

We remove the loose post and dig a wider, deeper hole. Then we set the post in concrete with a gravel base for drainage. This method provides a stable anchor that resists shifting, even when the soil dries out again.
