Gate sagging is often caused by the weight of the gate pulling on the hinges over time, especially in Dallas’s hot, dry climate which can dry out and shrink wooden posts and frames. Shifting clay soils can also move fence posts out of alignment. If the gate is wider than 4 feet or the post isn’t set deep enough, sagging is more likely.

A broken latch usually won’t hold the gate shut at all, or the spring mechanism is stuck.
