The main culprit is frost heave. When soil freezes, water expands and pushes fence posts upward. As the ground thaws, the posts settle unevenly, causing them to lean. This is especially common in NYC neighborhoods with clay-heavy soil or poor drainage, like parts of Queens and Staten Island.
