Questions and Answers

My metal fence has ice damage with bent rails and rust spots. What caused this, and can you fix it?

Ice damage happens when water seeps into tiny cracks in the metal, then expands as it freezes. This can bend rails, pop welds, and create rust. Yes, we can repair it. We'll cut out the damaged sections, weld in new custom-fabricated steel pieces, and apply a protective coating to prevent future rust. If the damage is widespread, we might recommend a partial replacement using thicker-gauge metal that handles Chicago winters better.

Our deck has loose railings and a few rotten boards. Is it time for a full replacement, or can you repair it?

That depends on the extent of the rot. If the rot is limited to a few boards and the underlying structure is sound, we can replace just those boards and tighten the railings. But if the support posts or joists are rotted from trapped moisture, a full replacement is safer. We'll inspect the deck, check for hidden damage near the house wall and post bases, then give you a straightforward recommendation with no pressure.

What causes fence posts to lean in Chicago, and how do you fix them permanently?

The main cause is frost heave. Our clay soil expands when it freezes, pushing shallow-set posts upward and sideways. The solution is to remove the leaning post, dig a hole below the frost line (about 48 inches), add gravel for drainage, and set the post in concrete. We also use metal post anchors for extra stability. This stops the post from moving again, even during a hard winter.
