Freeze-thaw cycles are the main culprit. During winter, water in the soil freezes and expands, pushing fence posts upward or sideways. When the ground thaws, posts may not settle back evenly. At Reamer Fencing, we counter this by setting posts below the frost line (typically 36–42 inches in Newburg) and using gravel backfill to improve drainage, reducing movement from seasonal ground shifts.

Look for soft or spongy spots at the base of fence posts, peeling paint that exposes damp wood, and dark stains along the grain – especially after heavy rain or snowmelt. Newburg’s frequent moisture from the nearby Conodoguinet Creek can accelerate rot. If you spot any of these, call us for an inspection. Catching rot early means we can often replace just the affected board or post instead of the whole fence.

Weatherproofing seals out moisture, which is the biggest enemy of wooden fences here. Our process includes cleaning the fence, applying a high-quality stain or paint with UV protection, and adding a water-repellent topcoat. This prevents cracking, warping, and rot from Newburg’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer humidity.
