The most frequent cause we see is ice accumulation during our harsh winters. When ice builds up on the mesh and freezes solid, it adds significant weight, often warping the fabric and pulling posts out of alignment. The freeze-thaw cycles also cause ground heave, which can push posts upward and loosen concrete footings.

Check for rust on hinges, gate latches, and tension bands. If you see pitting or flaking rust, or if the gate sags, sticks, or doesn’t latch smoothly, the hardware likely needs replacing. Also look for green or white powdery residue on galvanized parts; that’s a sign of advanced corrosion that weakens the metal.

The best approach usually involves replacing corroded hardware with marine-grade stainless steel or heavy-duty galvanized components, and then tensioning the mesh back to spec. For ice-damaged sections, we often recommend removing the warped panels and re-stretching the fabric, or replacing the affected panels entirely if the metal has been permanently distorted.
