In our area, heavy rain often saturates the clay-heavy soil, causing it to shift and soften around the post. If the post wasn’t set deep enough or with proper drainage (like gravel at the base), the ground can loosen, and the post will tilt. That’s why we always set posts below the frost line and use concrete or gravel footings to secure them, even during wet spells.

Loose rails are easy to spot: you might see gaps between the rail and the post, hear creaking in the wind, or notice the fence panel sagging. After a storm or wet season in Cleveland, check for nails that popped out or wood that’s begun to rot at connection points. If you catch it early, we can often just re-secure the rail—avoiding a full panel replacement.

For a leaning post, we remove the loose soil, brace the post plumb, and backfill with gravel and concrete for a firm anchor. For loose rails, we replace corroded fasteners with rust-resistant screws and , if needed, sister new lumber to the old rail for extra strength.
