Combined with the shifting of wooden gate posts due to our clay soil, the latch often becomes misaligned and won't catch properly. High winds can also stress the latch mechanism, causing it to bend or break over time.

Obvious signs include leaning fence posts, loose or missing pickets, and sagging gate panels. A less obvious sign is a persistent gap at the bottom of your fence or gate, which indicates the posts have been shifted by strong winds. If you notice your gate dragging on the ground or not latching at all, wind damage to the frame is a likely culprit.

First, we replace the broken latch with a heavy-duty, weather-resistant model designed for high-wind areas. Next, we assess the gate's frame and hinges. If the posts are leaning, we can re-set them in concrete or install a wind-rated hinge system. Finally, we add a diagonal support brace to the gate, which prevents sagging and keeps the latch aligned even during strong gusts.
