Questions and Answers

My deck boards are starting to split and feel spongy in spots. What causes this, and can you repair just those areas?

That spongy, split wood is usually from moisture getting trapped in the deck boards over time, common in our Philadelphia climate. If the damage is isolated to a few boards and the underlying joists are still sound, we can replace only the affected boards and reseal the deck. If the joists themselves are rotted or the deck structure is unstable, a full deck replacement is safer. I’d recommend having us inspect it; we’ll tell you exactly what needs fixing.

I have an older wood deck that is covered with flaking stain and some green mildew. Can you repair and refinish it, or does it need to be replaced?

Flaking stain and mildew are common surface issues from years of weather exposure without proper sealing. In many cases, we can pressure wash, sand, replace any damaged boards, and re-stain or seal the wood. That gives the deck a fresh look and a few more years of life. But if the wood is deeply rotted or the deck is structurally unsound, replacement is the only safe option. We can come take a look and walk through the decision with you.

My deck is about 15 years old and I’m tired of constant maintenance. Is it worth replacing it with composite material?

For a deck that age, especially in Philadelphia’s weather, a full replacement with composite decking is a great investment. Composite boards don’t rot, splinter, or need painting and staining. You’ll save time and money on upkeep for decades. We’ll remove your old deck, make sure the footings and frame are solid, and install a low-maintenance deck that fits your yard and your budget. Many of our customers in Fox Chase and nearby neighborhoods have gone this route and been very happy.
